State Parks and Campgrounds---State Tourist Travel Information

The Worlds First National Park

Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872, and as the subheading states was the first (and thus is the oldest) national park in the world. Yellowstone National Park is home to “world famous” Old Faithful geyser. It is also home to some 10,000 other hot springs and geysers. The majority of our planets’ geysers and hot springs are found at Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park covers some 2.2 million acres of land. In the year 2002, the park had over 2.9 million visitors.

There are many recreational activities which park visitors can partake in. Among the many recreational activities at Yellowstone National Park are these: backpacking; climbing; skiing; cross country skiing; biking; hiking; fishing; horseback riding; kayaking; swimming; snowmobiling; bird watching; nature watching; nature walks; snorkeling; and camping.

Yellowstone has three different RV parks, which are able to handle large recreational vehicles. Those are located at Flag Ranch, West Yellowstone, and Fishing Bridge. It is recommended that reservations be made for RVs that are over 30’, as there are a limited number of campsites which are available for RVs of that size.

Fishing Bridge RV Park is open from 5/16-9/28 of each year. This RV Park has water, electrical and sewer hookups. Let it be noted that Fishing Bridge RV Park is for hard-side RVs only (no sites available for tents or tent trailers).

There are numerous entrances to Yellowstone National Park. (Due to weather conditions, not all of the entrances are open year round).

The North Entrance is near the community of Gardiner, Montana. It is open year round to wheeled vehicles.

The West Entrance is adjacent to West Yellowstone, Montana. It is open to wheeled vehicles from mid-April to early November.

The South and East Entrances to Yellowstone National Park are open to wheeled vehicles from the first Friday in May to the 1st Sunday in November.

And finally, The Northeast Entrance is near the community of Cooke City, Montana. It is open to wheeled vehicles, by offering access through the North Entrance. All roads east of Cooke City are open when the weather permits it.

Yellowstone National Park is definitely one of the national parks that every traveler should experience. There are things at this park, which you won’t see anywhere else in the world. One final traveling tip: Don't feed the bears.
