State Parks and Campgrounds---State Tourist Travel Information

California is one of those states that samples a little bit of every culture and environment you could imagine. From towering redwood forests to gaping valleys, open stretches of desert highway to roads that wind above ocean cliffs, every day spent driving through California offers something new. California vacations may feature family favorites like Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm or more sophisticated retreats in Palm Springs.

California is a state begging to be driven through. It is the state that invented fast food, and they still manage to do it right—hit up an In ‘N Out Burger in Southern California and you’ll know exactly what I mean. Its highways are famous, scenic, and fun. It’s a true American experience to drive Route 66, the “Mother Road” according to John Steinbeck and the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, which has been accorded the honor a federally designated “All-American Roadway”. Or the 261-mile Bakersfield Loop will take you from the bountiful lows of the agricultural Central Valley to the wilds of the Kern River Valley and Lake Isabella.

It took a gold rush to encourage people to visit California in the first place, but these days the state of California offers a different kind of treasure. Whether you get your thrills strapped to a pair of skis or a giant roller coaster, whether you enjoy nature or big city life, California has it all.
