Known as the home of the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains, which dominate the western half of the state, Colorado is a state located in the western United States. The east part of the state is largely high plains. The state capital and largest city is Denver, where half of the state population is concentrated. The state was named after the Spanish word "Colorado" which means "reddish colored" that presumably refers to the red sandstone formations in the area or reddish brown color of the Colorado River.
