State Parks and Campgrounds---State Tourist Travel Information

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a state in the New England region of the United States. Its most known nickname is the Bay State, but it has others such as the Old Colony State or less commonly the Puritan state and the Baked Bean state. On December 18, 1990, the Legislature determined that the people of the state would be designated as Bay Staters. Boston is the capital of the state and its largest city too.

Massachusetts is recognized as the Bay State because of the several large bays that give its distinctive shape and coastline. It has the Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay on the state’s east coast, and Buzzards Bay to the south. A few cities and towns on the Massachusetts – Rhode Island border are also contiguous to Narragansett Bay.

This state has much to offer even though it’s so small; it has great beaches, outdoor fun, fresh-caught seafood, major league sports and a wealth of cultural activities. If you travel in your RV to Massachusetts, you must enjoy Boston with its many different activities and attractions such as the Kennedy Library and Museum, the Freedom Trail, the New England Aquarium, the Fleetcenter (spectacular home of the Celtics and the Bruins), Fenway Park (One of America’s oldest ball parks and home to the Red Sox), Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots), among others.

Also, you can’t miss crossing the Charles River and visiting Cambridge with its vibrant mix of ethnic cultures, students, scholars and visitors from around the world. You will find here the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, the nation’s oldest university.

Massachusetts is the most Irish state in the nation. Boston is often called the capital of Irish America because of its thriving Irish community, which dates back to colonial times and continues to the present day. For example, this it’s reflected in the colors of the famous Boston’s basketball team, the Celtics, which use the green and has a leprechaun with three-leaf clovers in his clothes as its logo. This was created by the team founder Walter Brown who was inspired by an old team from New York called the Original Celtics.
