State Tourist Travel Information
North Dakota is a north state in the Midwestern part of the United States. It’s the northernmost of the Great Plains states. To the north across the US and Canada border are the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba and to the south is South Dakota. The Missouri River flows through the western part of the state, forming Lake Sakakawea behind the Garrison Dam. Bismarck is the capital of the state and its largest city is Fargo.
This state is the land of the powwows that are an important part of American Indian culture. In Bismarck you will find one of the largest powwows events in the US, the United Tribes International Powwow, held the weekend after Labor Day. You will see that the types of dances and dancers are as diverse as the costumes.
Other great attractions in North Dakota is the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. With majestic Badlands scenery, abundant wildlife and all kinds of adventures, you will spend a good time. The two units of the park, the North Unit and the South Unit are distinctly different. In the South Unit, the Badlands have been shaped by millions of years of wind, rain, erosion and fire. The main access to this unit is through the historic town of Medora. The North Unit is accessible from U.S. Highway 85 south of Watford City, has taller buttes and is heavily forested in places.
Also, don’t forget when you travel in your RV to North Dakota to take advantage of its more than 50 state historic sites, its two state museums and its dozens of county historical societies. Another “must do” is to visit the wonderful International Peace Garden with its 2,339-acre botanical garden commemorating peace between the United States and Canada. You will love the more than 150,000 varieties of flowers!
