One of the most mountainous states in the United States is West Virginia. Known as the “Mountain State”, it is the only state in the nation in which all areas are mountainous. This state broke away from Virginia during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and was admitted to the Union as a separate state on June 20, 1863. The state’s capital and largest city is Charleston.
